Privacy & guidelines

Built for real, respectful meets

Last updated: 15 May 2026

Nearmate is a location-based service that helps people discover and coordinate real-world activities with others nearby. These Privacy & Community Terms (the “Terms”) describe how we handle your information, how you are expected to behave on the platform, and what happens when those expectations are not met. By creating an account, joining an activity, or otherwise using Nearmate, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, you must not use the service.

1. Information we collect

To operate Nearmate we collect a limited amount of information that is necessary for the service to function. This includes account identifiers (such as your phone number or email used for sign-in), a display name, optional profile details you choose to share, your approximate or precise device location while you use the app, the activities you create or join etc. We also collect basic technical data such as device type, app version, language, and diagnostic logs needed to keep the product secure and reliable. We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with third parties for advertising purposes.

2. Location and coordination

Nearmate uses your location to show activities and people who are relevant to where you are. You can choose, on a per-activity basis, whether to share an exact meeting point or only an approximate area, and you can stop sharing your location at any time by adjusting your device permissions or by removing yourself from an activity. You are responsible for the meeting points, addresses, and venues you publish. Do not share locations you do not have the right to use, locations that put others at risk, or locations chosen to deceive or trap another user.

3. Private join chats and communications

Private join chats exist so participants of an activity can coordinate without immediately exchanging phone numbers or personal contact details. Chats are intended strictly for coordinating the activity at hand. You agree not to use chats to send unsolicited promotional content, links, malware, sexual material, hateful content, or material that violates the rights of any person. Nearmate may store, scan, and review chat content where necessary to enforce these Terms, comply with the law, respond to reports of abuse, or protect the safety of users. Other participants in a chat can see what you write — treat every message as a record of your conduct on the platform.

4. Community conduct

Nearmate is for genuine, respectful connection around real-world activities. You must treat other users with basic dignity and good faith. The following are strictly prohibited: harassment, hate speech, discrimination, bullying, intimidation, stalking, sexual content or solicitation, content involving or directed at minors, impersonation of any person or organisation, and any behaviour that a reasonable person would consider abusive, degrading, or unsafe. Nearmate is not a dating or hookup platform, and any 18+ or sexual use of the service is not permitted.

5. Anti-spam and automated abuse

You may not use Nearmate to distribute spam, unsolicited advertising, referral schemes, affiliate links, chain messages, repeated identical content, or any communication whose primary purpose is commercial promotion rather than genuine coordination. You may not create activities you do not intend to attend in order to harvest contacts, drive traffic elsewhere, or inflate engagement. You may not operate bots, scrapers, automated accounts, or any tool that interacts with Nearmate other than through the official client, and you may not artificially inflate joins, ratings, views, or any other metric. Mass-messaging users you do not know, or contacting the same user after they have indicated they do not wish to engage, is treated as harassment.

6. Misuse and manipulation

Nearmate may not be used for any purpose other than coordinating lawful, in-person activities. You agree not to misuse the platform to deceive, manipulate, defraud, recruit for unlawful purposes, lure another person under false pretences, conduct social engineering, run pyramid or investment schemes, solicit donations under false claims, or otherwise use the service in a way it was not designed for. Misrepresenting who you are, your age, your intentions, or the nature of an activity is a serious violation of these Terms.

7. Threats, violence, and intimidation

Threats of violence, threats to harm a person, their family, their property, their reputation, or their livelihood are strictly forbidden — whether made in chat, in an activity description, in a profile, or anywhere else on the platform. This includes implied threats, coded threats, encouragement of violence by others, and statements that would reasonably make a person fear for their safety. Credible threats will be reported to law enforcement together with all relevant account data, consistent with applicable law.

8. Privacy of other users

You must respect the privacy of every other person you encounter through Nearmate. You may not publish, post, share, screenshot, record, forward, or otherwise expose another user’s personal information — including their full name, address, precise location, phone number, email, workplace, identity documents, photographs, or private chat content — outside of Nearmate without their clear, informed consent. Doxxing, outing, non-consensual intimate imagery, hidden recording, and public shaming are prohibited regardless of how the underlying information was obtained. Information another user shared with you privately is shared in confidence and remains theirs.

9. Legality

Everything you do through Nearmate must be lawful in the jurisdiction where you are located and in the jurisdiction where the activity takes place. You may not use the service to plan, advertise, facilitate, or carry out any activity that is illegal, including but not limited to the sale or distribution of controlled substances, weapons offences, trafficking, sexual services, gambling that is not licensed where it is offered, unlicensed financial activity, or any activity that infringes intellectual-property rights. You are solely responsible for your conduct, your content, and the activities you organise or attend. Nearmate does not verify the identity, background, or claims of other users, and meeting people in the real world is done at your own risk — use common sense, meet in public where appropriate, and tell someone you trust where you are going.

10. Enforcement

We may, at our discretion and without prior notice, remove content, hide activities, restrict features, suspend accounts temporarily, or terminate accounts permanently when we believe a user has violated these Terms or has otherwise behaved in a way that puts the community at risk. In serious cases — including credible threats, exploitation of minors, fraud, or activity that is unlawful where it occurs — we may preserve and disclose account data, message content, and location history to law-enforcement or regulatory authorities to the extent permitted or required by applicable law. Banned users may not create new accounts to circumvent enforcement.

11. Reporting and your responsibility

If you see content or behaviour that violates these Terms, or if something feels unsafe, stop engaging and report it through the in-app reporting tools as soon as possible. If you believe you or someone else is in immediate physical danger, contact your local emergency services first. You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure and for any activity that takes place under your account.

12. Your data rights

You may request access to the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct information that is inaccurate, or ask us to delete your account and the personal data associated with it, subject to legal retention obligations and to the legitimate need to retain limited records for safety, fraud-prevention, and enforcement purposes. Deletion of your account does not erase messages that other users have already received, and content you posted publicly may persist in their records.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time to reflect changes in the product, in applicable law, or in our community standards. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page, and material changes will be communicated through the app. Continued use of Nearmate after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

By using Nearmate, you acknowledge that you have read and accepted these Privacy & Community Terms, and you agree to behave on the platform in a way that is lawful, honest, and respectful of every other person you meet through it.
